Pamfir
Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuck
2022 Feature Film 102 minutes Ukraine / France / Poland / Chile / Luxembourg
Subtitle: French
Fiction
After a long absence, Pamfir, a beast of a man who’s renounced his smuggler’s past for life on the straight and narrow, returns to his wife and teenage son. There in his small village in the Carpathians, preparations are in full swing for the traditional carnival, an event that promises some slightly fearsome fun. When his son gets involved in a murky matter of arson, Pamfir is forced to revert to his old ways –and in so doing, ticks off the local mafia. Equal parts sociological study, family drama and edge-of-your-seat thriller, this début feature mixes genres with a carnivalesque gusto worthy of Kusturica. Corruption, guilt, loyalty and redemption: a backdrop of universal resonance for the new Ukrainian cinema.

Butterfly Vision
Maksym Nakonechnyi
2022 Feature Film 107 minutes Ukraine / Czech Republic / Croatia / Sweden

Fiction
After two months in a detention camp in the Donbas region, Lilya, a young woman soldier, is released during a prisoner exchange. Back home with her husband and family, she finds the violence she’d suffered in captivity coming back to haunt her. Maksym Nakonechnyi delivers an intense first feature, full of insights into the many ramifications of an armed conflict that’s more topical than ever. A powerful, uncompromising work, BUTTERFLY VISION also has a lot to say – and viscerally show – about the use and cruel abuse of women’s bodies, especially the constant control they’re subjected to. These struggles are embodied by the self-assured performance of Rita Burkovska.

Klondike
Maryna Er Gorbach
2022 Feature Film 100 minutes Ukraine / Türkiye

Fiction
July 2014. As the War in Donbas rages on, villagers Irka and Tolik, who live in an isolated hamlet, uneasily await the birth of their first child. When an airliner crashes nearby, Tolik wants to flee the village, but Irka flatly refuses, instead asking her husband and her nationalist brother Yuryk to mend their political differences for long enough to repair their bombed-out home. A very real disaster – that of the Malaysia Airlines flight shot down on July 17, 2014 – is the pretext for the Ukrainian filmmaker to mix family drama, war film and a very dark theatre of the absurd into this pitiless rumination, sensitive and meticulously framed, on one woman’s resistance to the horrors of war. An award-winner at Sundance.
