Montreal’s Place des Arts celebrates Soviet Communist tyranny
-----------------------------------------------------------
The Ukrainian Canadian Congress (UCC) is appalled that Place des Arts in Montreal is hosting performances of the so-called “Red Army Choir” on December 26-30. The Red Army committed brutal war crimes and ruthless crimes against humanity on a mass scale during WWII. For more than four decades after the end of the War, the Red Army was the instrument by which the Soviet Union subjugated and suppressed the peoples of eastern Europe.
For Ukrainians, Poles, Czechs, Slovaks, Hungarians, Romanians, Bulgarians, and many others who were forced to live under the tyranny of Communist domination, the Red Army represents and embodies the cruelty of Soviet Communist rule.
Today, Russia’s war against Ukraine is in its sixth year. Russian-occupied Crimea suffers under a regime of terror, wherein human rights and basic freedoms are suppressed, the Indigenous Crimean Tatar People, ethnic Ukrainians and anyone who opposes Russia’s occupation are systematically targeted for repression by the occupation regime. The “Red Army Choir” has on several occasions performed in Russian-occupied Crimea, glorifying Russia’s military aggression and the Russian regime’s contemporary crimes.
That an institution that receives funding from Canadian taxpayers sees fit to host a group that venerates the criminal history of the Soviet Union and Soviet Communism is an affront to the values of freedom, democracy, peace and human rights that we as Canadians hold dear.
Call to Action – We need your help
The UCC calls on all Canadians to express their revulsion to the celebration of Soviet tyranny that Place des Arts will host later this month. Please write to Place des Arts and request that they cancel the performance of the “Red Army Choir.”

I write to you to express my indignation at your decision to invite the Red Army Choir to perform at Place d’Arts Maison Symphonique in Montreal, December 26-30, 2019.
For tens of millions of members of the nations of eastern and central Europe, the Red Army is a symbol of hatred, tyranny, oppression and foreign domination. As the Red Army moved west during WWII, they were responsible for war crimes and crimes against humanity on a colossal scale. This is the legacy that Place d’Arts Maison Symphonique chooses to celebrate by inviting the Red Army Choir to perform.

I urge you to cancel the performances of the Red Army Choir at Place d’Arts Maison Symphonique.
