The recent presidential elections in Ukraine represent the possibility for a significant change of course in the government’s handling of the country’s nascent religious crisis. At the end of 2018, fears of a potentially-major escalation in the country’s internal conflict began to swirl around news of a schism between the Russian Orthodox Church and Constantinople over the latter’s plans to create an independent Ukrainian church. With the news of schism came statements made by former Ukrainian president Petro Poroshenko in which he announced his intention to seize major religious sites belonging to the Russian Orthodox Church’s jurisdiction in Ukraine. In particular, his statements that Kiev’s famous Pechersk Lavra would eventually be taken as part of the new church provoked a strong response from Vladimir Putin, who insisted that Russia would defend the religious freedoms of Russian Orthodox believers from persecution and foreign meddling. A scenario in which the Ukrainian government attempted to seize a site like the Pechersk Lavra, the seat of the Russian Orthodox Church within Ukraine and home to thousands of monks loyal to Kirill, the Moscow Patriarchate, would represent a serious escalation that had the potential to spiral into a much larger and more dangerous conflict...
In July 2015, the magazine published an article by Maria Butina advocating improved relations between the Russian Federation and a future US Republican Presidential administration.[1] In 2018, Butina was arrested by the FBI and charged with conspiring to act as an unregistered Russian agent.
The deployment of sniper rifles and electronic warfare gear serves as a reassurance to those who thought Trump and new Ukrainian President Zelenskiy would balk at deterring Russia.
The Trump administration will deploy $250 million worth of military aid and equipment – some of it lethal – to Ukraine's armed forces as it seeks to deter Russian aggression amid a recent spike in hostile acts, the Defense Department confirmed Tuesday.
The new equipment the U.S. will provide includes sniper rifles for Ukraine's special operations forces, as well as grenade launchers, counter-artillery radars and equipment to detect and protect against electronic warfare. The Obama administration and initially President Donald Trump balked at sending lethal weapons to Ukraine reportedly for fear of provoking Moscow, despite pressure from Congress. Trump authorized sending Javelin anti-tank missiles in 2017.
The U.S. will also increase its support to the Ukrainian navy and maritime troops, following last year's crisis at the Kerch Strait resulting in Russia's capturing 24 Ukrainian seamen, who remain in detention under the auspices of criminal proceedings.
The new aid, which Congress authorized and has pushed the Trump administration to disperse, brings the total U.S. support to Ukraine to $1.5 billion since it began in 2014, when Russia annexed the Crimea peninsula and began its ongoing support for separatist militias in Ukraine's eastern region, known as the Donbas. Ukrainian soldiers continue to die during isolated skirmishes and intermittent sniper and artillery fire in the simmering conflict...
The suspects were named as Igor Girkin, a former colonel of Russia’s FSB spy service; Sergey Dubinskiy, employed by Russia’s GRU military intelligence agency; and Oleg Pulatov, a former soldier with the GRU’s special forces spetsnaz unit. All were Russian soldiers previously sent abroad.
A fourth suspect, Leonid Kharchenko, is a Ukrainian. He led a military combat unit in the city of Donetsk as a commander, it was alleged.
Girkin was minister of defence in the Moscow-backed Donetsk People’s Republic (DNR). He was the commander of the DNR when the plane was shot down on 17 July 2014. Dubinskiy served as Girkin’s deputy in the DNR, and Pulatov was Dubinskiy’s deputy. Kharchenko was under their command.
The three Russian suspects are believed to be living inside Russian territory and the Kremlin refuses to extradite its nationals. There is little prospect Girkin, Dubinskiy and Pulatov will appear in court when their trial begins on 9 March next year
